Alcohol-related injuries are on the rise in Australia so the owners of some bars are, get this, installing rubber sidewalks outside their bars.
Really?
This is comparable to building more cemeteries in response to an increase in alcohol-related deaths.
When I worked in quality improvement, we understood that the symptoms were an indication of a problem but not the cause of the problem. For example, if you have a pain in your side, something is causing the pain. If you only treat the symptom, or the pain, you won’t solve the underlying cause.
Excellence means addressing the real problem, not just the symptom. Australia needs to look at the drinking…not the falling.
